Scratch’s annual “Scratch Week” is coming up and we are so excited to bring the Yobea community Beacon Week! Scratch is the very first block coding platform students use when starting their journey at Yobea. We would like to join Scratch in celebrating their global community by bringing this event to Yobea in the form of Beacon Week, a series of collaborative workshops and friendly competitions, which will be held from May 15th – May 21st!
Students can join in any of the event(s) of their choosing, and we encourage them to invite their friends or family to join us! Beacon Week events include:
Date and Time: May 15th, 10:00 – 11:30 AM PST
Information: Scratchathons are one of Yobea’s most enjoyable and anticipated events. These hackathon-style competitions help engage students in Scratch and develop team skills. Each Scratchathon starts off with a science lesson, taught in an engaging way and geared towards covering an NGSS science standards topic. The team with the best user interface, creativity, and adherence to the theme will win a prize! Students may register individually (allowing Yobea to pick a team for them) or as a team registering the names of their team members.
2) Workshop: Introduction to Platformers
Date and Time: May 16th, 5:00 – 6:00 PM PST
Information: In this workshop, we’ll be introducing students how to create their own platformers on Scratch! Students will learn how to create their own moving backgrounds and characters that can jump over obstacles. All students will walk away with their own platformers to show off to their family and friends!
3) Appathon: Opening Ceremony
Date and Time: May 17th, 5:00 – 6:00 PM PST
Information: Another series of hackathon-style competitions, Appathons push students to create apps in teams that address real-world problems they see around them. Teams displaying skills in app development, creativity, and understanding of user interface components will win a prize! Students may register individually (allowing Yobea to pick a team for them) or as a team registering the names of their team members.
4) Appathon: Work Periods
Date and Time: May 18th and May 19th, 5:00 – 6:00 PM PST
Information: Work in your teams during the Appathon in live sessions on Zoom. Members of Team Yobea will also be available to answer any questions and help debug any issues that may arise!
5) Appathon: Award Ceremony
Date and Time: May 20th, 5:00 – 6:00 PM PST
Information: An online award ceremony to commemorate all the hard work students have put into their apps! This will be held live on Zoom and will showcase all projects and the awards won. Family and friends are invited to attend this event.
We will also be sending out our newsletter on May 21st as a summary of the week’s celebrations to our registrants. We can’t wait to see you there!
